We said in December that we\u2019re aiming to give you more frequent \nupdates about our online connectivity and responsiveness efforts, so \ntoday we\u2019re sharing details about our live study methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This Pitch Notes will focus on the deliberate and informed approach \nwe take towards making potential connectivity or responsiveness change. \nThis is because we have to consider real-world networking conditions \nwhich are made up of many variable factors such as packet loss, weak \nWiFi signal, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Live Study Methodology<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
When we make any online change or update, it affects millions of \npeople, each with unique playing conditions. This is why we\u2019ve started \nimplementing live studies alongside our existing internal testing, \nwhenever we investigate a potential change related to connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once we identify a potential change and have tested it internally, we\n determine a group of volunteer players who can give us actionable \nfeedback. These players play the game with the potential change in \neffect for a period of time, they let us know everything about their \nexperience, and their matches give us valuable real-world data to \nanalyze. Although our internal investigations are able to simulate \ncountless networking scenarios, it\u2019s always helpful to look at \nreal-world data as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Live studies greatly assist our ability to make informed decisions \nregarding future connectivity and responsiveness changes. We\u2019re very \nfortunate to have so many players who want to participate and share \ntheir experiences with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One thing that\u2019s important to consider though, is that our live study\n approach has to be deliberate in order to work effectively. You can \nthink of this like any real-world study; they take time to generate \nactionable results. We look to make large scale changes when we\u2019re \ncertain of their long term effects, and this certainty comes from \ninternal testing, data, and player feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Current Studies & Next Steps<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
We\u2019re currently running a live study for small backend change related\n to button responsiveness which we need to measure the real-world impact\n of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the coming weeks we will be adding an in-game button overlay for a select number of players we are partnering with.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this button overlay, we want to let players see their inputs in \nreal-time but also the impact the connection with the server has on \nthose inputs. This also helps us analyze matches more efficiently since \nwe can get clips of players sharing their experience and raw input. \nWe\u2019ll have more to share about the results of the button overlay live \nstudy in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This Pitch Notes has focused on our live study methodology, but keep \nin mind that this is only one part of our overall connectivity and \nresponsiveness efforts. As we make continued progress, we may look to \nroll out some further changes via additional Live Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
