According to an announcement released just moments ago by Konami, five Serie A clubs have signed an agreement to hand over their licensing rights to the football title eFootball.

Como, Hellas Verona, Parma, Torino, and Udinese may therefore lose their official licences in EA FC 27. This means that Serie A, already missing Atalanta, Inter, Milan, and Lazio, could end up with a drastically reduced number of fully licensed teams, complete with official names, badges, and kits.

Weโ€™re using the conditional here because, for now, Konami has only shared a short post on social media. Without an official press release, itโ€™s impossible to confirm whether the rights have been granted on an exclusive basis. Normally, however, Serie A club rights are managed directly by the teams themselves and are usually sold under exclusive agreements.

After the Canadian developer had successfully regained the official licences for Napoli, Juventus, and Roma, nothing suggested such a major setback was on the horizon. In fact, it even seemed that Electronic Arts might surpass the competition and finally offer a fully licensed Serie A in the next instalment of its football simulation franchise.

This is a major blow for Italyโ€™s top division, particularly for fans of Career Mode and realistic simulations. For Ultimate Team, however, the impact is relatively minor. Given the high degree of customisation in that mode, the absence of official licences isnโ€™t a huge issue, as playersโ€™ real names and attributes will remain in the official roster.

With as many as nine out of twenty teams potentially missing, assuming none are relegated to Serie B, such a stripped-down version of Serie A was practically unthinkable until now. Weโ€™ll continue to follow the situation closely and keep you updated as new details emerge.
