According to statements made to VGC by an anonymous source, who attended the last meeting held on the occasion of the publication of the latest financial report of Electronic Arts, the CEO Andrew Wilson said that the collaboration with FIFA was an impediment to the development of the world’s leading football simulator for videogame entertainment.
If the current agreement expires after the next World Cup (to be held in Qatar) is not renewed, FIFA 23 could be the last chapter of the series that will use the FIFA name. The negotiations seem to have stalled after the request for 2.5 billion dollars for the next decade, a figure that is doubled compared to the last agreement.
Due to these two sensational scenarios, it seems that EA and FIFA will soon separate and the series will definitely change the name. In addition, the CEO of EA claims that without the constraints imposed by FIFA the development of the game will be considerably greater and will be able to guarantee countless new game modes that will not be restricted to a number of 11 players per team.
“Basically, what we get from FIFA in a non-World Cup year is the four letters on the front of the box, in a world where most people don’t even see the box anymore because they buy the game digitally. In a World Cup year of course, we get access to the World Cup, but in the broader context of global football on an annualised basis, the World Cup is important but it’s not the most important. We have 300 other licences that give us the content that our players engage with the most and the most deeply.” Andrew Wilson said.
