In The Beginning

FIFAโ€™s development team had a strong focus on accurately representing women when developing The Journey trilogy.

โ€œFrom the very beginning, when we started thinking about telling a story in FIFA, we wanted to have diverse representation,โ€ Scott said. โ€œI heard it from our Narrative Director Matt Turner like this: โ€˜In the quest to tell a true story, we made that choice to be diverse, because it was just simply true.โ€™โ€

The Journey started in FIFA 17 and revolves around the fictional Alex Hunter. Born to a white father and a black mother, the biracial Hunter fought to carve a place for himself in the English Premier League. While doing so, Hunter grappled with the shadow of his former pro father who left his family.

The Test

While the team had already been off to a solid start with their work on inclusion in The Journey, a visit from Disney made Scott realize just how much more they could be doing.

โ€œ[Julie Ann Crommett] did a talk at our studio early last year. She spoke about these times in her career where sheโ€™d taken a look at at a movie or a TV show through the lens of diversity and found major problems,โ€ Scott said. โ€œThey would have a TV show that had a female main character. But in the background of scenes, there wasnโ€™t another woman to be seen.โ€

The idea of tracking where and how women are featured in media was recently popularized through the Bechdel Test. The rules of the test are as follows:

  1. There must be at least 2 female characters
  2. These two characters must talk to each other
  3. The subject of the conversation must be about something besides a man

Frameworks that serve to improve representation like the Bechdel Test are important to the FIFA team. Diversity and Inclusion has grown to be a key factor the team considers in their design process for a myriad of reasons; media has the power to help people see others outside themselves. There is also the case of the EA SPORTS tagline: โ€œItโ€™s In The Game.โ€ Women are playing soccer in the real world, and all EA SPORTS franchises strive to depict the state of the game as accurately as possible.

โ€œUsers of our games would have different reasons for why representation matters, and there are a lot of reasons, but at the end of the day, I think we can say unequivocally that representation matters,โ€ Scott said.

โ€œThereโ€™s a really good yearly article found byย feminist frequencyย where they break down gender in games at E3 every year. They had a really amazing quote: โ€œWe rarely encourage boys and men to fully project themselves onto female characters.ย When players are encouraged to see the game universe exclusively through a humanized female character, it helps challenge the idea that men canโ€™t or shouldnโ€™t identify with women as full human beings.โ€ I feel like this is a really important opportunity for us to set the tone of empathy for our users.โ€

Looking at every scene, Scott noted a lack of women in offices, on training pitches, in halls of stadiums, and even during a womenโ€™s match where there wasnโ€™t a single female background character. There was a sense that female characters didnโ€™t have the appropriate resources or attention dedicated to them, which left these characters feeling shallow or inauthentic.

After gathering these facts and data points, Scott developed a diversity assessment. The assessment encouraged people to think about the topic of authentic diversity when creating stories, characters, and products.

โ€œThose statements were shared widely across EA and excited people,โ€ Katie explained. โ€œUltimately they helped us to understand three key things. What are we doing to make sure we portray different demographics authentically? Are we imparting any unconscious bias into our gameplay narratives? And how often are we seeking stories of underrepresented people in our game?โ€

Enter Kim Hunter

With all this in mind, diversity and inclusion were considered as important as budget and UX research in The Journey: Champions.

โ€œThatโ€™s kind of how we ended up with this incredible character, Kim Hunter,โ€ Scott said. โ€œAn authentic female character who is strong, true, and real.โ€

Women were consulted on all aspects of the script and story, which sparked conversations about Kimโ€™s actual in-game mechanics. Kim is a very different character from Alex Hunter, and the game would need to acknowledge that. She operates in a different world where her age and personality are factors in how she communicates. Where Alex was either fiery or cool, Kim would be either brash or nerdy.

In addition to personality, adjustments were made on the pitch as well. The team paid added attention to authentic motion for female players, especially in cinematic scenes.

โ€œWe had previously added womenโ€™s football to the game in FIFA 16 using authentic motion,โ€ Scott said. โ€œThis year, we made a big investment in authentic female animation in cinematics to match our outstanding gameplay.โ€

United States womenโ€™s national team co-captain Alex Morgan also provided valuable input, helping shape Kim Hunterโ€™s world in The Journey.

โ€œAlex would say things like, โ€˜I wouldnโ€™t say this like this,โ€™ or, โ€˜we wouldnโ€™t do that like that,โ€™โ€ Katie said. โ€œAlex detailed how the squad would come onto the pitch or listen to their coach. She made suggestions, she worked with us, she collaborated with us. These amazing insights she shared helped us turn The Journey: Champions into a truthful story, based on real-world experiences.โ€
