Through a press release, EA Sports has announced the official details regarding the contents of the Squad Battles mode that allows you to face the roses of the FUT community off-line gamers and get prizes based on the weekly placement.

Whatโ€™s Squad Battles?

Take on AI-controlled squads from the FUT community to earn Battle Points, move up the leaderboards, and earn rewards.ย

Weekly competition matches

What are weekly competition matches?

Weekly competition matches are the 40 matches that you play each week that count towards your Battle Points score for that week.

How do matches work in Squad Battles?

In FUT 20, you will now be able to play Squad Battles as much as you want. Matches are separated into weekly competition matches and other matches.

Any matches you play after the 40 weekly competition matches do not contribute towards your weekly score, but you will still earn normal match Coins.

Battle Points

What are Battle Points?

Battle Points are earned at the end of each of the first 40 Squad Battles matches each week, which make up your weekly competition matches. They are used to determine your Rank in the weekly Squad Battles competition.

Please note that if you choose to end a match early or to not play a match by refreshing and itโ€™s part of your first 40 weekly competition matches, you will not earn any Battle Points from that match.

How do you determine how many Battle Points I get at the end of a match?

The formula is a little different depending on the outcome of the match, whether you won the game or lost it. You can check them out below.

Once youโ€™ve played your first 40 competition matches for the week, any other matches you play that week will not earn you Battle Points.

Featured Squad Battles donโ€™t use these formulas. However, you can find out how Battle Points are awarded for those Squads further down in this article.

One thing to note: if there are decimal places in the final Battle Points result, the value is always rounded up. This is reflected in the examples of the calculations here:

Win formula

This only applies in a Squad Battles Match that you win.

[(Team Rating Score Win + Match Result + Skill Coins) * Win Difficulty Modifier] + (Goals For * Goals Difficulty Modifier)

Hereโ€™s how the win formula is broken down:

  • Team Rating Score Win
    • This value is created using this equation:
    • (Team Rating * 3) + (Chemistry Rating / 2)
  • Match Result
    • This value is different if you win or lose. Since this formula is for a win, this value will be 200.
  • Skill Coins
    • This is the value you are shown at the end of the match. It calculates how many FUT Coins you get for various actions, like scoring goals. For this equation, itโ€™s a direct copy of that value into the formula.
  • Win Difficulty Modifier
    • This value is generated based on the difficulty setting you chose before the match:
Difficulty (Win)Modifier
Beginner0.5
Amateur0.6
Semi-Pro0.7
Professional1
World Class1.6
Legendary2.1
Ultimate2.6
  • Goals For
    • This value is created using the following equation:
    • (Total Goals Scored [Max of 5] * 40)
  • Goals Difficulty Modifier
    • This value is generated based on the difficulty setting that you chose before the match:
Difficulty levelGoal Difficulty Modifier
Beginner0.5
Amateur0.5
Semi-Pro1
Professional1.5
World Class2.5
Legendary3.5
Ultimate4
Loss formula

This only applies in a Squad Battles Match that you lose.

[(Team Rating Score Loss + Match Result + Skill Coins) * Loss Difficulty Modifier] + (Goals For * Goals Difficulty Modifier)

Hereโ€™s how the loss formula is broken down:

  • Team Rating Score Loss
    • This value is created by using the following equation:
    • (Team Rating * 3) + (Chemistry Rating / 2)
  • Match Result
    • This value is different if you win or lose. Since this formula is for a loss, this value will be 50.
  • Skill Coins
    • This is the value you are shown at the end of the match. It calculates how many FUT Coins you get for various actions, like scoring goals. For this equation, itโ€™s a direct copy of that value into the formula.
  • Loss Difficulty Modifier
    • This value is generated based on the difficulty setting you chose before the match:
Difficulty (Loss)Modifier
Beginner0.2
Amateur0.25
Semi-Pro0.4
Professional0.5
World Class0.6
Legendary0.7
Ultimate0.7
  • Goals For
    • This value is created by performing the following equation:
    • (Total Goals Scored [Max of 5] * 40)
  • Goals Difficulty Modifier:
    • This value is generated based on the difficulty setting that you selected prior to the match
Difficulty levelGoal Difficulty Modifier
Beginner0.5
Amateur0.5
Semi-Pro1
Professional1.5
World Class2.5
Legendary3.5
Ultimate4

Example time again: You played a match on Professional difficulty, against a team with an 87 Team Rating and 86 Chemistry. You lost the game, scored 2 goals, and received 145 Skill Coins, so youโ€™d turn the formula:

[(Team Rating Score Loss + Match Result + Skill Coins) * Loss Difficulty Modifier] + (Goals For * Goals Difficulty Modifier)

Into this:

[(304 + 50 + 145) * 0.5] + (80 * 1.5) = 370 Battle Points

Featured Squad Battles are special matches where you can play against Squads created by members of the FIFA and football community, such as real footballers, celebrities, or FIFA pro players. You can replay Featured Squads to improve your score.

Not every weekly competition in Squad Battles will have a Featured Squad Battle.

New this year in FIFA 20, Team of the Week (TOTW) Squads will now function like a Featured Squad. Each week youโ€™ll be able to compete against the TOTW to earn Battle Points.

The amount of Battle Points earned for playing a Featured Squad Battle or TOTW Squad match is not the same as you would earn for a normal Squad Battle match. Instead, the number of Battle Points you earn is based on whether you win or lose the game, and what difficulty you played the match on. The specific Battle Point values are below:

Difficult LEVELWinLose
Beginner15001400
Amateur15501400
Semi -Pro16001400
Pro17001400

Squad Battles ranking system

How does ranking in Squad Battles work?

In Squad Battles, the Battle Points you earn during the week determines your Rank in the weekly competition.

Each Rank can only hold a certain percentage of the players competing in Squad Battles during the current weekly competition.

To get the highest rank, you will need to earn more Battle Points than all other players in the weekly competition. The percentage breakdown of each Rank can be seen in-game.

If you are one of the Top 100 players in a weekly Squad Battles competition, youโ€™ll earn rewards based on your position in the Top 100.

Does that mean I can change Ranks even if I havenโ€™t done anything?

Yes, you can. If you start off playing Squad Battles matches early in the week and earn a lot of Battle Points, you might initially be in a top Rank. But if you donโ€™t continue playing matches throughout the rest of the week or earn less Battle Points, other players could still be playing and earning Battle Points. That means your Rank could drop, if they out-earn you and move up.

On the flip side, you could also move up a Rank if players donโ€™t out-earn you.

How often do the leaderboards update?

The leaderboard updates roughly every five minutes.

When do I get my rewards?

Youโ€™ll get your rewards shortly after the event ends.

Opponent selection

Where do my opponents in Squad Battles come from?

Yourย  AI-controlled opponents in Squad Battles come from the real Squads used by other players in FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT). Specifically, Squads that were used by players when playing Squad Battles, Draft (Online and Offline), FUT Champions, and Division Rivals.

How do you choose the opponents?

When a set of opponents is provided, either at the start of a new Squad Battles competition or when you perform an Opponent Update, we always provide one Squad from each of our three Squad difficulty buckets: Easy, Medium, and Hard.

Then we select a fourth Squad from either the Easy or Medium buckets, with a 50% chance of the Squad coming from either bucket.

How are the Squadsโ€™ difficulties determined?

Each Squad in FUT has both a Team Rating value and a Chemistry value. When those values are added together, you end up with an Overall Squad Rating. Each of our difficulty buckets in Squad Battles contains a range of Overall Squad Ratings:

  • Easy = 0-140
  • Medium = 141-182
  • Hard = 183+

Squad refreshes

How do refreshes work in FIFA 20?

Previously in FIFA 19, Squad refreshes were time-based, so you could only ever play 44 matches throughout the week.

But this year in FIFA 20, you are now in control of when you refresh, giving you the choice of when you want to play your Squad Battles matches.

Please note that if you refresh but have not yet completed the four matches that are available, the unplayed matches will still count towards your 40 competitive matches for the week.

Can I reset my refreshes?

No, if you refresh and skip matches that count towards your 40 competitive matches for the week, you cannot get those back.

FIFA 20 is available from September 27, 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch. Keep on following us also through our social Facebook and Twitter for other news and information.
