Peter Moore, former president of Electronic Arts, made important statements about the loot boxes present in the popular FIFA 21 Ultimate Team mode.
According to what we learn from the interview released to Gamesindustry, FUT 21 absolutely cannot be compared to gambling. The current director of the mobile gaming area of Nifty Games thinks that not knowing the contents of the packages causes gamers a feeling of positive uncertainty and this pushes them to open dozens of them consecutively.
โPeople loved it,โ he says. โI think that sense of uncertainty and โWhat are you going to get?โ and then bang, Ronaldo or Messi would roll out and thatโs a wonderful thing.โ
โThis is a personal view, but the concept of surprise and delight vs gamblingโฆ on a continuum, theyโre a long way from each other. You buy or grind your way up to getting a gold pack, you open it up, and youโre either happy or you think itโs a crappy pack. I donโt see that as gambling, but again, this is my personal view as an outsider right now.โ
What do you think about it? Is the euphoria caused by the unpacking of FUT 21 comparable to that caused by legally recognized gambling? Can loot boxes really create a real addiction?
