On Wednesday EA Sports disclosed the first FIFA Ratings to reveal the overall and official stats of the players that we will find in the database of the popular FIFA 21 Ultimate Team mode.
Many of the ratings have produced fierce criticism from both the community and some players, such as Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte and Inter striker Romelu Lukaku. Looking at some overall and some stats you can have the feeling of reading unreal ratings especially when compared with the performance on the pitch.

Let’s try to give some practical examples: the Lazio striker, Ciro Immobile, received an important upgrade given the exceptional performances provided last season which allowed him to receive the Golden Shoe. (OVR 87 – Pace 84 – Shot 88 – Pass 67 – Dribbling 83 – Defense 39 – Physical 77).
At first glance, the stats of Lazio player seem to be true unless they are compared with the stats of other illustrious champions of the European football scene. Wanting to compare them with those of two young phenomena like Sancho and Gnabry (even if they are players with different characteristics from the Italian) they give the feeling that the ratings given are not balanced.

The young English of Borussia Dortmund Jadson Sancho (OVR 87 – Pace 83 – Shot 74 – Pass 81 – Dribbling 91 – Defense 37 – Physical 64), who makes speed and superfine technique his winning weapons, finds himself inexplicably having a parameter lower than the speed compared to Immobile and presents “only” 81 to the passage statistic. Values that do not seem to match the real counterpart.

The same goes for the strong Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry (OV 85 – Speed 82 – Shooting 83 – Passing 78 – Dribbling 85 – Defense 43 – Physical 70) fresh European champion who received a “poor” 82 for Pace and 85 to dribble. Also in this case the German striker finds himself having a lower value (pace) than the Lazio center striker, which is unthinkable if you are attending a real football match.
However, it should be noted that the overall and stats of each individual FUT player are the result of an average of the total stats and are also influenced by the role and international reputation assigned to them. Furthermore it must be said that the gameplay component has its weight in determining the final ratings.
EA Sports with FIFA 21 introduced the Ratings Collective. The Ratings Collective is a talent scouting network with a passion for The World’s Game. From sprint speed to finishing, passing accuracy to stamina, they meticulously watch what happens on the pitch to assess, judge, and evaluate players across more than 30 attributes that define a footballer’s skill level. Their assessments come together to create the FIFA Ratings – the authoritative ranking of over 17,000 players’ footballing ability.
At this point there are two hypotheses under consideration:
- The Ratings Collective made mistakes when evaluating the characteristics of the players.
- EA Sports has imposed limits on them because the software house’s future plans provide for a radical change compared to previous editions in which some features such as speed that has always had a decisive weight in the gameplay.
